British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several approach shafts leading to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," he commented. "They were part of a great many British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, following an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
