Seven alleged members of German left-wing extremist group face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was behind attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or are in custody.”
